Noon Hour mural by APHENOAH, Norderstedt, Germany

A tall, narrow mural filling the end wall of a modern residential building, seen from a parking deck on a sunny day with green trees on the left. Two harbour workers, many times larger than life, are painted from behind, standing at a sandstone balustrade with arched openings. The man on the left wears a dark flat cap, a blue-green work jacket and dark trousers, and rests his right arm across the shoulders of the older man beside him, who wears a matching cap, a pale olive shirt with black braces and dark work trousers. They look out across grey-blue water at a large container ship stacked with colourful containers, and behind it a city skyline with a tall slender tower on the left. Rust-red posts rise on the right. A small square signature, “APHE NOAH”, sits in the top right corner of the painted wall, and a grey metal grille runs along the bottom of the building.

Two harbour workers in flat caps stand at a stone balustrade, one with his arm around the other, and look across the water toward Hamburg. The duo APHENOAH turned Paul Kayser’s wide painting “Die Mittagsstunde” into this tall mural on a residential building above the car park of the Schmuggelstieg Center in Norderstedt. It was the first wall of the Walls of Vision series in northern Germany.

5 things to know

  1. An old Hamburg painting, turned uprightWalls of Vision has urban artists repaint historical paintings on house walls. For Norderstedt the team chose “Die Mittagsstunde” by Paul Kayser (1869–1942), a founding member of the Hamburgischer Künstlerklub of 1897 and of the Hamburg Secession. APHENOAH first turned his landscape-format picture into a portrait-format composition “for the façade on Schmuggelstieg” (“angelegt für die Fassade am Schmuggelstieg”). 2. (“Unlike the original, we moved the two dock workers, who look across to Hamburg in the evening sun, closer together, made the landscape they look at more contemporary and the colours more intense.”) With the new closeness the duo want to “das traditionelle Bild des starken Mannes aufbrechen” (break up the traditional image of the strong man) and respond to “der neuen Möglichkeit zu menschlicher Nähe nach Corona” (the new possibility of human closeness after Corona). Walls of Vision
  3. Nothing taken outNoah Kauertz: “Mit dieser kleinen Veränderung bewahren wir alle im ursprünglichen Werk vorhandenen Elemente und somit dessen Bildästhetik.” (“With this small change we keep all the elements of the original work, and so its look.”) Hollatz adds that Kayser “was strongly influenced by Albert Marquet” (“stark von Albert Marquet beeinflusst”), which let the duo bring in their own strong colours. 4. A local effortNorderstedt Marketing looked for the wall, and Bruhn Immobilien Management provided the façade free of charge. Norderstedt Marketing thanks local artist Sonja Lampen, Tobias Mährlein, “langjähriger Buchhändler am Schmuggelstieg” (a long-time bookseller on Schmuggelstieg), and Carsten Krohn of Norderstedt Marketing. 5. A sign since December 2024In December 2024 the backers met in front of the mural again: a new sign now tells passers-by about the Walls of Vision project. Carsten Krohn: “Es ist etwas Besonderes, dass wir an diesem Ort nicht nur Kunst sichtbar gemacht haben, sondern jetzt mit dem Schild auch ihre Geschichte und die Vision dahinter teilen können” (“It is something special that at this place we have not only made art visible, but can now also share its story and the vision behind it with the sign”).
