Kangaroo 3D mural by Odeith, West Lane, Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia

Two stacked photos of the same white building corner in West Lane, Darwin. Top: Odeith’s mural of a large reddish-brown kangaroo with a joey in its pouch, painted across the corner so it seems to stand on top of a small grey van, which is painted onto a utility box at the foot of the wall. A yellow kangaroo road sign reading “Next corner”, big tan letters spelling DARWIN and a red “Galleria – Walk thru to mall” sign are on the wall. Bottom: the same corner before painting, bare white walls with a plain green utility box in the corner.

Portuguese artist Odeith painted “Kangaroo” in West Lane, Darwin, for the 2019 Darwin Street Art Festival, on what the festival calls his first trip to the city. From the right spot, a kangaroo with a joey in its pouch seems to stand on top of a small van, which he painted onto the utility box at the foot of the wall. Street Art Cities reports that the van has since been replaced; the kangaroo was last marked as seen there in May 2025.

4 things to know

  1. Made for one viewpointThe festival’s record says that “On his first trip to Darwin, Odeith created a 3D kangaroo illusion designed to be viewed from a specific angle.” Cannon Hill Chronicles says he has “a special interest in perspective and shading” and calls his style “sombre 3D”. DSAF · Cannon Hill Chronicles
  2. Something truly AustralianCaravan Correspondent: “he wanted to do something truly Australian. What better than a kangaroo and joey!” Cannon Hill Chronicles calls the result “a kangaroo standing atop a transit van.” Caravan Correspondent · Cannon Hill Chronicles
  3. The van was a utility boxThe van is painted onto the green utility box that stands in the corner. One of the festival’s progress photos shows Odeith spraying the van’s outline straight onto the box, and in the finished photos the box’s “Danger” and “Authorised persons only” signs stay on the van’s side. DSAF
  4. The van has been replacedA Street Art Cities marker added on 14 November 2024 says: “Unfortunately the ‘van’ has been replaced which somewhat spoils this image.” One photo on the marker shows the kangaroo above a plain green box with no van. The marker was last marked as seen on 28 May 2025. Street Art Cities
