Hallstatt is a small market town in Upper Austria, squeezed between the Hallstätter See and the steep slopes of the Dachstein massif. Salt has been produced here since the Bronze Age, and the town gave its name to the Iron Age Hallstatt culture. After a fire in 1750 destroyed its timber buildings, the town was rebuilt in late Baroque style. Today 741 people live in the municipality, and it is the core of a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape inscribed in 1997. Source Source Source Source Checked
