Two young women, one wrapped in an owl and one wearing a fox as a hood, fill a wall more than 17 metres high on Berlin’s Teufelsberg. HERA painted them from 6 to 11 May 2025 for the helpline for women affected by violence, the Hilfetelefon “Gewalt gegen Frauen”. Beside them she wrote the same message twice, in English and German: “Asking for help is never a weakness.” and “Du bist nie schwach, wenn Du Dir Hilfe suchst.”, with the helpline’s number, 116 016.
4 things to know
- Painted for a helplineThe wall was a joint project of HERA and the Hilfetelefon “Gewalt gegen Frauen”, a free, anonymous helpline for women affected by violence. The helpline says the aim was to raise awareness of gender-based violence and to encourage people to call. Its number, 116 016, is painted in the corner, with an arrow pointing to it. - Six days, 17 metresHERA painted from 6 to 11 May 2025 on a wall the helpline and the venue both describe as more than 17 metres high. It was presented on 10 May 2025, during the venue’s “Breathing Art” weekend of live painting and yoga, with helpline staff at an information stand. Hilfetelefon · Teufelsberg
- One message, two languagesThe English line “Asking for help is never a weakness.” sits above the larger German one, “Du bist nie schwach, wenn Du Dir Hilfe suchst.” (“You are never weak when you seek help.”). The helpline describes the figures as an owl and a vixen in slightly human form. Hilfetelefon
- On a Cold War listening postThe wall belongs to the former radar station on Teufelsberg, which American and British intelligence services used for about 20 years. It was shut down in 1992, and artists and graffiti writers moved into the empty buildings in the years after. Teufelsberg history
